    Unlinking pages to wrong person

    Hello,

I created a page for Seattle city council member Tom Weeks but a red link for an Olympic sailor was connected to it. I'm still relatively new at Wiki, and I would like to learn how to solve this problem and avoid this in the future.

    Thanks, Bpuddin (talk) 00:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This will happen sometimes. All you have to do is go and remove the incorrect wikilinks. -- asilvering (talk) 00:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! What is the code that I use to make the links red again? Bpuddin (talk) 00:47, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to use any code - just remove the incorrect wikilink (take off the [[ ]] on either side of Tom Weeks), or disambiguate it (example). If someone only just added the wikilink, I'd simply revert their edit. If the link predates the creation of your article, you might want to disambiguate it instead, so that it will still show as a red link. -- asilvering (talk) 00:54, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Blocked

I am blocked for no reason. How can I create articles or how can i pass the text to others to create the articles? Timothymrandell (talk) 02:03, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timothymrandell, you are not blocked. Did you used to have another account? -- asilvering (talk) 02:08, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Timothymrandell: Using an alternative account in violation of a block is a violation of WP:BADSOCK and I strongly suggest you stop using this account immediately. Log on to the blocked account and find the instructions for requesting an unblock / block appeal on your talk page; alternatively, see Wikipedia:Appealing a block (on your blocked account). GeorgeMemulous (talk) 02:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you are blocked from editing, creating articles is the last thing you want to consider for now. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 02:26, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Cullen328 has blocked the OP, claiming the above is an admission of sockpuppetry. But it could also be an IP or VPN issue; and the block should be undone, absent any other such evidence. (I do note that User:Fredric Jameson, who is not blocked, has edited on the same topic, Marie-Térèse Baird, which may or may not be a coincidence).) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:55, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    This matter is being discussed at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/User:Fredric Jameson. Cullen328 (talk) 17:05, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh uh. Well, Fredric Jameson is quite dead these days, so that's another problem. -- asilvering (talk) 18:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Asilvering, that is an unexpected curve ball. Cullen328 (talk) 18:20, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Sizemark

I am an English speaker, and Wikipedia articles appear in English, but everything else on the page is in German. This started a year or two ago. Can you tell me how to make it all English again? Sizemark (talk) 05:54, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sizemark you have probably somehow set your preferences to German. To return to English go to Einstellungen (preferences) and then Spracheinstellungen (language preferences), select en - English and click Einstellungen speichern (save preferences). TSventon (talk) 06:04, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sizemark: You can see your preferences in English at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences?uselang=en and change to "en - English" under "Internationalisation". PrimeHunter (talk) 12:09, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    What's the best citation?

Hi, what's the best way to cite this page in the 2024 AFL Grand Final article? For one thing, it uses {{cite web}} templates, which I've basically never used; I never use these templates. For another, it's a webpage with a transcript of a radio broadcast, and I don't quite know how I'd cite that even without worrying about the template; I pretty much always write from physical sources. I've added content to the article using this source, but I hid it all pending assistance with the citation; if you could both create a good citation and un-hide the new content, I'd appreciate it. Request for user name change

I would like to request you to change user from this Makers Muse to Makers' Muse Makersmuse (talk) 08:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Makersmuse Please follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Changing username. Shantavira|feed me 08:39, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your current user name is Makersmuse, not "Makers Muse". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:52, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Makersmuse, please don't apply to have your username changed. After all, such applications take other people's time, and "Makersmuse" has so far made a total of one edit. Simply stop using "Makersmuse" and create and use "Makers' Muse" or whatever it is that you want. -- Hoary (talk) 11:47, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This account is attached to an email that no longer exists. What do I do?

This account was created quite a long while ago under a different username until it was renamed, but I now realized after all this time that it was linked to an ancient email of mine that no longer exists. How can I change it if the confirmation email can never, ever be accessed? Preinstallable (talk) 11:40, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Preinstallable: An email address is optional and it appears you never set one but you do it or change it at Special:Preferences. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, since there isn't an "Email this user" option showing at Preinstallable, there may not be a registered email address for this account.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:10, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    wikipedia page out of date

Hello. My wikipedia page is out of date and needs updating. Is there a way to request such updates? The wiki site does not reference my new books and other activities. Here is the wikipedia page: Jamie Metzl

Here is my personal website with more updated information: https://jamiemetzl.com/ Thank you! Jamie Metzl 2603:7000:2240:32:814E:C06E:1A82:A578 (talk) 13:38, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for disclosing your conflict of interest instead of directly editing the page. You'd be better off directing this to Talk:Jamie Metzl. Any claims you make and updates about yourself should be attributed to third-party sources, and the primary source you linked should only be used for non-controversial self descriptions. As well, your article has a tag stating that you may not be notable enough for a Wikipedia article, so finding sources might be difficult, but Wikipedia is built off of information that can be verified, not information that is necessarily true. Confirmed user properties needed

Trying to update the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera logo, as the one in the page is outdated, a User:Ybsone listed for deletion on Wikimedia Commons the image, mentioning a copyright problem, saying as it is the company logo, it can't be my own work, but actually, i do work for Touring Superleggera, and im in charge for updating this page and the logo.

The page notifying me what happened, says "You can read and participate in the deletion discussion if you are interested or do not wish the file to be deleted. Thank y", but the deletion discussion says: "This page does not currently exist. You can search for this page title in other pages or create this page."

How can i update the right logo? it seems to be banned M.Duffau (talk) 13:41, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Most logos on Wikipedia are uploaded directly to the site, instead of being on Commons. This is because Commons is for free-to-use work, and, unless your company is going to release their logo under a Creative Commons license for anyone to use, it doesn't belong on Commons. You can upload the file at Wikipedia:File upload wizard, but must provide a fair use argument. Note that the image is likely to only be used on that page. You are an employee working under a conflict of interest, so I suggest you read the articles WP:COI and WP:PAID if you plan to edit beyond changing the logo to avoid potential issues that may arise when editing on behalf of your organization. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 13:52, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GeorgeMemulous You may find the WP:NONFREE rationale that goes with the 2011 version of the logo at File:Touring superleggera srl.jpg helpful when uploading the new version to the English Wikipedia. Once the new logo is used in the article, a bot will delete the old one as we don't keep non-free files that don't appear in articles. Go to this page to upload your logo as non-free. @Miss Dunia Well, you have now made two edits! On articles, there is a tab at the top of the page which takes you into the editor. Hello, Miss Dunia. You appear to have found the answer after posting here, since you edited Jay Schwartz.
Your edit there was reverted, but please don't be disheartened: this kind of back-and-forth is normal: see WP:BRD.
By the way, I would have reverted your edit too, as "from the city of" means more than just "in": it means that it was the city (as an institution) that gave the award. ColinFine (talk) 15:09, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Linking Languages

    Hi,

I just finished writing an article on the German film director Lutz Büscher. I have tried to link it to his German page, but I have been unsuccessful. I can't do anything in the "Add Languages" section, and my online research has brought me nowhere. Please help me, and thank you in advance! -Erin (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 15:17, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PhoenixCaelestis, I clicked on edit links, entered de and Lutz Büscher and that created a link via Wikidata. This is explained at Help:Interlanguage links#Adding a new link. TSventon (talk) 15:26, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! -Erin (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 15:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PhoenixCaelestis:, is that a partial translation of the German page? If so that should be mentioned in an edit summary, see Help:Translation#License requirements. TSventon (talk) 16:34, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I made the article myself, but I did use the sources from the German page. I did not go in and translate the German article into English through Wikipedia, if that's what you mean. -Erin (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 16:40, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PhoenixCaelestis:, by translation I mean making a translation through your own knowledge of German or through automatic translation of any kind. I asked whether it was a translation because it can be a matter of judgement whether an article is a translation or a new article which mostly covers the same material.
By the way, I have added some categories based on those in Michael Kehlmann. TSventon (talk) 17:05, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not really translate the article, I just used the German article and its sources as my jumping off point to write the English article. I have some (very) limited knowledge of German, and I used Collins Translator to get a general idea of the subject. All the text, however, is my own writing. Also, thank you for adding the categories! -Erin (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 17:23, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to be a bother after our conversation finished, but I've translated this Wikipedia page on a country that previously did not have a page, and I need help figuring out how to link my article to it. Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, textbook, or scientific journal. This type of material, while verifiable and accurate, isn't the content Wikipedia is for. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 16:27, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prof.JG.Cambridge, as an administrator, I could view the deleted content. It was a self-promotional résumé, and self promotion is not permitted on Wikipedia. Articles published to mainspace are subject to scrutiny on their notability. Unless your topic has coverage from third-party sources, it doesn't belong in mainspace. Self-promotional material in the manner Cullen328 described has no place on Wikipedia. See WP:CRYSTALBALL (for your patents which are not as of yet accepted), WP:Notability (for any topic you choose to write about), and WP:COI (as you have a conflict of interest when writing about a topic you are involved with). GeorgeMemulous (talk) 16:44, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Prof.JG.Cambridge I see no relevant publications authored by you in Google Scholar, so it is very unlikely you could pass any of the notability requirements listed at WP:NACADEMIC. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:17, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing an FTP server

I was on the article Radius of outermost closed isobar and I found that reference number 4 leads to an ftp:// address, which I believe is the address of an FTP server. I'm unable to view it in my browser, and I assume the server is down? I'm also almost certain it's a primary source so I may remove it later on if nobody else can verify it. Are citations to FTP servers allowed at all? GeorgeMemulous (talk) 17:39, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can view and download it here on the web. I downloaded it with FileZilla, which has much better FTP capabilities than a web browser.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 18:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I suspected, it's the synthesis of a primary source in the article. I'm aware of FTP, I'm just more concerned as to whether or not FTP citations themselves are allowed, as this is the first one I've stumbled upon. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 19:07, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What protocol is used to retrieve a source has no impact on the source's reliability. In fact, sources do not have to be online at all. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 19:14, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the connection to offline sources. My main concern is that it was more difficult to get to than an HTTPS connection and only accessible with specific software, even if such software is free and relatively common. I've removed the claim from the article, as it was synthesized from the primary source (the database itself was linked as a source to back up its own existence). GeorgeMemulous (talk) 19:19, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A few years ago any browser could render ftp:// url. That is deleted because ftp protocol transmit password in clear. Even when the password is normally no real password because no real login is done for anonymous access, it is tempting target for criminals. So ftp server learn https and browser forget about ftp. Maybe try checking if https protocol works instead? 2A02:3032:308:A7D3:6020:6890:D467:113B (talk) 19:10, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how to disable the little square "Contents" box that covers up the text in the upper left corner of Wikipedia page displays.

What to do about AI generated content?

I believe this section was created using AI Dan_Taberski#Hysterical it's factually incorrect and none of the sources are real. The URL for the NYTs includes the year 2023, which means the source would've been published before the podcast was released in 2024. Not all of the information is completely wrong. Should I just correct the factual errors and move on? TipsyElephant (talk) 19:34, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If it fails our reliability test, I would say remove the entire thing. AI content is generated by mechanisms which cannot distinguish truth from fact, and poison everything in which they are used. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:36, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Almost certainly an LLM-generated section, given how it makes the same claim twice (what the topic is) in different words with perfect grammar. I also see the generic name John Smith in the NYT citation. GeorgeMemulous (talk) 19:41, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Hover-and-preview-and-go-to

Kudos for this fabulous new feature! ...except for one problem, and surely I'm not the only editor bothered by this: Previews appear far too quickly, almost instantly. Frankly the incessant little pop-ups can become a nuisance, especially when I'm hunting through edit histories; they block my view like a giant trailing mouse-pointer that I can't turn off. It would be very helpful for there to be a brief delay, maybe 2 seconds of mouse hover, before the preview feature is engaged. — HelpMyUnbelief (talk) 21:59, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HelpMyUnbelief: There are different preview features but if you see it in edit histories then I guess it's "Navigation popups" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. You can save this in your common JavaScript to get 2 seconds:
    window.popupDelay = 2.0;

The default is 0.5. You can customize many other things at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups#Options. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

π, if you have to ask, then presumably it's not very obvious that it's either excellent or terrible. If indeed it seems to be somewhere between those poles rather than at either, then you should specify what you want to use it for. (For one thing, there's a major difference between (A) "her portrayal of Gozer the Gozerian is iconic" and (B) "her portrayal of Gozer the Gozerian has been called 'iconic'".) And such questions are better asked at WP:RSN than here. (My reaction? The safest thing to do is to propose changes at the article talk page as you clearly have a conflict of interest as you appear to represent an organisation. Hi. I want to make an existing "Episode table" template table collapsible, default: collapsed. I've tried wrapping it in "{| class="wikitable mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" |+ ... |}, which I found somewhere, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

    Harmful user

I've warned user:Sinclairian about the biased, inaccurate, and harmful edits they've been doing. These are on very niche topics that nobody's ever, ever going to notice. Like who's gonna actually check the source translation on the Arslan Tash amulets? Well, I did because the translation is so scrabblingly amateurish, (Also because I always look lately when I see that username on one of my watched articles) and the user's rendering of it actually had some "improvements" that might make the scholar look better or worse. The reader would think the translation has been accurately copied and pasted when that's not the case. The other translation's even worse by some scholar I don't know. Someone legitimate, I'm sure, but not good. I think questionable artifacts should be categorized as such and noted in the first paragraph, and translastions of questioned items and forgeries shouldn't be included for obvious reasons. Anyway, I think the user should be banned. Inaccurcies on minor Semitic languages that a dozen people know will stick around forever; the quietness of it means the ripples on public knowledge will spread with no end. Very subtly destructive stuff. (Sorry if this is the wrong place, it's my first time reporting a user.) Temerarius (talk) 23:01, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Marcellintehe, nobody here has any idea what you are talking about. Clarity is required. Cullen328 (talk) 06:12, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe Marcellintehe is looking for something like this? Just a guess. Maproom (talk) 06:37, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A professor running some student editing thing?

This is the AGF way to look at it, though I also see LLMs in use, at least in the summaries, but User talk:Noah Theodore Johnson, whose user page says they are a professor, has created a few articles where most accounts who edited it are accounts with nearly no edits elsewhere and usually who have edited in multiple of their created articles. Could someone who knows how these things should be ran and/or who has more time to investigate than me, give this a look? – 2804:F1...ED:16CD (talk) 05:44, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Erm, I still don't have time to do more investigation, but more investigation let me find out that one of the involved accounts, CronoWiki, is checkuser blocked in pt wiki as a sock of an user who's been socking since 2022 (who does not seem to have a sock case in this wiki). Which is at least suspicious. – 2804:F1...ED:16CD (talk) 05:49, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Opaulista and User:TransWikipro were also sockpuppets of Oliver Lex. This might warrant a sock investigation. Industrial Insect (talk) 14:45, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Plus User:Rabino Eli Schlesinger. Almost all the new users editing that page were socks of Oliver Lex. Industrial Insect (talk) 14:49, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Somehow I missed User:Oliver Lex themself editing the article. I haven't found reason enough to believe that the article creator is involved, with the exception of how quickly after the article creation the socks started editing. Industrial Insect (talk) 14:56, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Industrial Insect: Ah, thank you for making the SPI case, I was struggling to type all the accounts, just Sephardic surnames had a whole bunch. @Izno(thank you too!) also requested a global lock for them after checking them, so they have all been globally locked now. – 2804:F14:809E:1401:D06A:A5D1:7293:F040 (talk) 21:21, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What if a reference link no longer works and the document can't be found? Do I remove the reference, or make a note that the article can no longer be found? I see several of these issues on a page I'm editing. EllieNowels (talk) 19:39, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@EllieNowels, see WP:DEADLINK. Links from Wikipedia are archived by the Wayback Machine, so in most cases, a copy will be available at archive.org. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 19:42, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Configure User:MiszaBot to archive signpost

I currently have User:MiszaBot to archive my talk page at 90d intervals. I would like to archive Signposts every week. Is there a way to configure it, or another bot , to archive signpost on a weekly interval?

    Expected Outcome

Only the latest signpost is shown on my talk page. all earlier signpost entries are archived. Tonymetz 💬 23:31, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    tax receipt

hello! my dad gave a donation (Canada) and it's been 3 days and hasn't received a tax receipt. 64.228.211.197 (talk) 00:38, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Wikipedia editors have nothing to do with processing donations or giving receipts. That is all handled by the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find out more at Ways to Give and there is an email address. Cullen328 (talk) 01:07, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the donation was to Wikimedia Canada with Paypal then https://paypal.wikimedia.ca/donate.html says: "If you wish to receive a tax receipt for your donation, make sure to include your full name, mailing address, and email address in PayPal. Please note that we will only issue receipts for the current year at the beginning of the following year for the total of your yearly donations. Receipts will be sent by email."
