Removed the DE category

[edit]

Removed the DE category. To my understanding it is not - doesn't it use WindowMaker? Dysprosia 22:46, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

GNUstep is a desktop environment, WindowMaker isn't, it is a window manager. The WindowMaker page says Window Maker was written primarily by Alfredo Kojima (lead developer since 1997) and released under the GNU GPL, with the intent to integrate into the GNUstep desktop environment. Edward 23:02, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Well, I think my memory of what GNUstep was, was out of date - they seem to have got a lot of stuff done! They seem to provide a lot of DE-ish stuff, so I'll replace the link Dysprosia
It's more an application development framework than a desktop environment and should be compared to GTK+ rather to GNOME. A lot of non-GUI softwares are using it. --58.64.44.70 (talk) 18:13, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the desktop environment category, per the Introduction to GNUstep, which clearly states that "GNUstep is not... a desktop: The GNUstep project supplies several official default applications, such as a Workspace Manager and a Preferences application, but GNUstep project itself is not a desktop project." GNU relation

[edit]

Does this project have any relation to the GNU project aside from the clever name and use of the GPL? --Gwern (contribs) 23:02, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe at one point it was slated to be the GNU desktop, but kind of got left behind because of the progress of KDE. GNOME was developed initially as a response to KDE, and the rest is history. Squiggleslash 22:48, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Of course it's GNU related, that's why it's GNU GPL 3. Also the http://livecd.gnustep.org/ is one of the listed free software live linux systems. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.58.239.38 (talk) 17:15, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's in LGPL 2 and some new small chunk of it is 3 dual. It is a GNU project. Not that every project that use GPL is a GNU project. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.64.44.126 (talk) 17:51, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a look at http://www.gnu.org/ you see it in big letters: GNUstep GNUstep is a fully-functional object-oriented development environment. We need developers to write and port applications to GNUstep so that we can make it a great experience for users. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gürkan Sengün (talkcontribs) 09:53, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Before linux came along, it was going to be the Hurd kernel running the GNUStep GUI..... but now its linux/gnome

Obviously GNOME was a dead end: http://apple.slashdot.org/story/13/03/05/2256243/gnome-founder-miguel-de-icaza-moves-to-mac — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gürkan Sengün (talkcontribs) 09:03, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

HippoDraw

[edit]

The article says HippoDraw provided the impetus to create GNUstep, but HippoDraw is “written in C++, with user interaction via a Qt-based GUI and a Python scriptable interface.” There is nothing to contradict this on the HippoDraw web site. At first I thought it was a different HippoDraw, but the author is the same. What gives? -Ahruman 09:39, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If QT was available for NeXtStEp[Shift]^H then may be it was not written in Objective-C initially. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.64.44.126 (talk) 17:54, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look like QT, does it: http://www-sldnt.slac.stanford.edu/hepvis/Papers/Web/5/ and http://www.slac.stanford.edu/cgi-wrap/getdoc/slac-pub-5758.pdf — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gürkan Sengün (talkcontribs) 09:56, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HippoDraw was originally written for NeXTSTEP using Objective-C. Porting HippoDraw to Windows was the beginning of GNUstep, even though HippoDraw has later switched to QT. Dylansmrjones (talk) 18:51, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Screen shot

[edit]

Screen shot is loaded with non-GNUstep docklets and could be misleading. So I think it should be replaced. --58.64.44.126 (talk) 18:07, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GNUSTEP Live CD

[edit]

This does not appear to be an official part of the GNUstep project per the Introduction to GNUstep page, which specifically states that "GNUstep is not an operating system clone. It is not a distribution of GNU/Linux, FreeBSD or any other operating system now, nor will it be in the future. Although other people may decide to package an operating system with GNUstep as a front end."

Things that are not officially part of the GNUstep project should not be presented here as if they are. If the GNUSTEP Live CD is indeed a notable Linux distro, it should have it's own article, which should be named GNUSTEP (operating system). Then it could be mentioned and linked in this article provided it's made clear it is not part of the project. Or it could simply be listed in the See also section.... Yworo (talk) 19:11, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well they've set up the live.gnustep.org dns entry, I think this is official enough? I'm helping the GNUstep project for the debian packages, that I base the live cd on. Please consult #gnustep on the official developer irc network, OR the mailing lists for more information. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gürkan Sengün (talkcontribs) 09:51, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's not sufficient. We require reliable sources. DNS entries, irc networks and mailing lists do not qualify as reliable sources. Yworo (talk) 16:50, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
